Mother's Day Special! 20% off Row House Farm Fiberarts 100% Silk Stonewashed Crepe de Chine Scarf
Melanie Rowan has studied and practiced fiber arts for nearly 15 years. She and her husband Gary have a small fiber farm in Rockingham County, VA. They raise rare sheep breeds: Leicester Longwool and Wensleydale, and the farm includes a small laying flock of hens, two livestock guardian dogs and two barn cats. They also grow lots of gardens, both flower and vegetable.
The products of the farm offered a diversion into hand-made fiber arts. Wool, roving, yarn etc. plant material, and flowers for dyeing. Melanie jumped into learning more about fiber and creative ways to use it, mainly weaving and felting. Interest segued into hand dyeing, using both chemical dyes for their vibrant lovely colors and blends, and natural dyes: Indigo and plant dyes with their organic saturations and imprints. Melanie is currently working on felting and eco printing silk and wool.
Eco Print Silk Scarves: 100% silk scarves are mordanted and dyed completely naturally. The process is lengthy and layered. The scarves are first mordanted – this is what helps the plant material to leave an imprint. Next the scarves are laid out and designed with live plant materials. A blanket (alternate piece of fabric) is laid on top and the layers are tightly wound up and bound. The bound bundle goes into a pot and steams for a minimum of 2 hours. Then the bundle rests for a minimum of 2 days while the colors and imprints rest into the silk. The bundle is opened to reveal a lovely design of eco printed foliage. If desired, the process goes on to add more natural color, over-dye with indigo or even layer on more plant foliage and process a second or third time. Each piece is a one of a kind.
